In the beginning, social media was developed to share stories of trips to Disneyland, vacation photos, who loves who and so on. Further back, the printing press was created to disseminate a common story or news event. Television, Radio and Newspapers have all developed methods of reaching their target audience when it is the best time to reach you.
Prior to the advent of Social Media, people had very few opportunities to "broadcast" their point of view. For example, the FCC must authorize you to broadcast to more than just yourself if using the public airways; there are many obstacles to printing and distributing your own Newspaper, I don't know anyone capable of having their own Television Show. You cannot simply stuff a piece of mail into another's mailbox. You must obtain the permission to distribute and pay a tax or fee for the delivery by an agent of the US Government.
Telephones are restricted to but a few lines and then are cumbersome and require a particular time to operate, voice mail aided in the distribution whereas the listener and speaker can meet anytime. Email works in this manner.
Now for the obvious - Social Media. A combination of all the known types of broadcasting, hosted by private ventures and accessed through public utilities. Anyone can now broadcast nearly without limitation. The rebuilding of the Great Library is gathering ether.
Without oppositional force, publicly available information is being gathered on every individual on the planet. Recordings from conception to post-humous activities are readily available. The Department of Homeland Security subscribes to your blog.
The honest, broadcasting of your life and made publicly available to anyone and suscribed to by your big brother is either a panacea or pandora. For those of you who blog, tweet, twitter, chat, text, call, distribute, mail, print or shout on the street corner - everything you say can and will be used against you if the need arises.
